NIOSH Training for Nurses on Shift Work and Long Work Hours
Benefits of Shift Work and Long Work Hours (Continued)
Being off during weekdays also gives nurses the ability to use public places – for example, grocery stores, banks, movie theaters, and golf courses – during less crowded times and at reduced rates.
Also, during weekend, evening, and night shifts, the hospital work environment is less hectic, with fewer visitors, rounding physicians, and patient care activities. Nurses often enjoy more independence during nonstandard shifts.
Some nurses whose circadian rhythms make it extremely difficult for them to get up early in the morning feel better when working evening or night shifts.
The remainder of the training will focus on the risks linked to these schedules and strategies to reduce the risks.
