Glycemic Control Module

This module supports an electronic health record (EHR)-neutral standard for reporting patient-level medication and blood glucose data using digital Quality Measures (dQMs).

  • Data enables calculation of inpatient medication-related hypoglycemia events by the NHSN application.
  • Generates reports for glycemic control rates for the facility.

A future version of the Glycemic Control Module will incorporate inpatient hyperglycemia measurement.

Objectives of the Glycemic Control Module

  • Provide U.S. hospitals with glycemic control measurement to support quality improvement and improve patient safety.
  • Contribute to benchmarking of glycemic control metrics across U.S. hospitals and evaluate national trends over time.

Benefits of the Glycemic Control Module

*For hospitals that can report inpatient medication-administration data via Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources® (FHIR).

The module does not replace the current reporting system for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program. Facilities should continue to report their eCQM glycemic control data using CMS Quality Reporting Document Architecture (QRDA).

Facilities

The Glycemic Control Module is currently available to select U.S. hospitals participating in the NHSNCoLab.

Eligible Facilities

In the future, all inpatient facilities enrolled in the Medication Safety Component and compliant with Health Level Seven International® (HL7) FHIR standards will be eligible to participate.

Data Submission

Facilities work with their EHR vendors to enable data transmission via the NHSN FHIR application (NHSNLink). NHSNLink connects directly to a facility’s EHR to collect patient-level data for calculation of medication-related hypoglycemia events by NHSN.

  • Participation in the module requires FHIR vR4.0.1 or higher APIs in Production and data conformance according to US Core 6 as described here: NHSN FHIR dQM Readiness Guide.
  • Manual data entry, Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) data and CSV file transmission are not available for this module.

Data Analysis

The NHSN application calculates summary glycemic control metrics and patient-level event determinations based on data submitted. NHSN provides these data to the participating facility via analysis reports in the NHSN application.
