Burkholderia infections associated with hospital ice machines

B. multivorans is found in water, can be antibiotic-resistant, and lead to severe infections, especially among immunocompromised and critically ill patients. During 2020–2024, 46 cases of health care-associated infections from four hospitals were linked to contaminated ice and water from the same brand of ice machines. To limit spread of water-related organisms, health care facilities should devise and implement a water management program. During water-related outbreaks, health care personnel should consider avoiding the use of tap water, including ice and water from ice machines, for patient care.

Vaccine coverage among kindergarteners

Nationwide, vaccine (MMR, DTaP, polio, varicella) coverage among children in kindergarten decreased from 95% in the 2019–20 school year to <93% in 2023-24. The exemption rate increased to 3.3% in 2023–24 from 3.0% the year before and exceeded 5% in 14 jurisdictions. Decreasing vaccination coverage and increasing exemptions increase the risk for disease outbreaks. Clinicians can educate parents about the safety and effectiveness of vaccinations required for school entry, and the risks of delayed, incomplete or no vaccination to children, family members, classmates, and the community.
