Caregivers’ health
One in five U.S. adults are caregivers to family members or friends with a chronic health condition or disability. During 2021–2022, measures for 13 of 19 indicators were worse for caregivers than for noncaregivers, including smoking, poor mental health, and obesity. Clinicians can identify patients who serve in a caregiving role and encourage them to seek support they might need to prioritize their own mental and physical health. Many community organizations offer interventions to support caregivers.

Oropouche virus disease
Oropouche virus is spread to humans by infected biting midges and some mosquito species. Patients typically experience fever, chills, severe headache, myalgia, and arthralgia. After resolution of initial illness, recurrent symptoms are common. Rarely, hemorrhagic manifestations or neuroinvasive disease occurs. Outbreaks in parts of South America and Cuba are concerning because of reports of two deaths and adverse pregnancy outcomes. As of August 16, 2024, 21 Oropouche cases were identified among U.S. travelers returning from Cuba.
Clinicians should counsel travelers to areas with Oropouche transmission to prevent bug bites, and in particular inform pregnant travelers about the latest recommendations, including considering deferral of travel to the areas with outbreaks. See the following CDC Travel Notices: Oropouche in South America and Oropouche in Cuba. How to request testing, interim clinical considerations and guidance, and the latest case counts are available. CDC is working to learn more about this emerging disease.
