What to know
- Use CDC's rabies PEP calculator to generate and evaluate rabies PEP vaccination schedules based on ACIP recommendations.
- The tool can help with both an initial PEP schedule and with clinical decisionmaking if a patient has deviated from the recommended schedule.
Rabies PEP Calculator
- Every attempt should be made to adhere to the recommended vaccination schedule set by ACIP.
- Rabies PEP includes administration of human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and a series of rabies vaccine doses, all of which are important for preventing rabies infection.
- The first vaccine dose (day 0) should be administered as soon as possible after an exposure.
- After each vaccine dose is administered, users should enter the actual date received into the tool to generate updated timing for remaining doses and ensure continued alignment with ACIP recommendations.
- Delays of a few days for individual doses may be unimportant but longer lapses may have unpredictable or negative health outcomes.
