First, Texas active tobacco retailer locations were geocoded using the ArcGIS geoprocessing tool. Then, a 2023-2024 Texas school data shapefile was downloaded and added as a layer to the map. Texas Tobacco Prevention and Control Coalitions (TPCC) were selected and displayed using select by attribute. The TPCCs with the three highest number of tobacco retailers < 1,000 feet of a school were selected to be mapped (Bexar County, Ellis County, and Johnson County). To determine the number of schools within 1,000 feet of a tobacco retailer, select by location was utilized by choosing the intersecting tobacco retailers within a 1,000-foot search distance from a school location. This was replicated for the three counties. Within the layout section, inset maps were created by utilizing the extent indicator tool. Adobe Acrobat Pro was utilized to format and move several features of the map.
The Texas Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPCP) funds community coalitions to implement comprehensive tobacco control efforts using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention best practices and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's Strategic Prevention. The purpose of the TPCCs is to prevent and reduce tobacco use in communities across Texas. This map will provide the TPCP with information regarding the number of schools within 1,000 feet of tobacco retailers in the TPCCs. With this information, the TPCP can help inform respective partners where intervention is needed to make their communities safer, healthier, tobacco free, and smokefree.
