The Mississippi Delta area along with some counties in the central part of the state show the highest prevalence of hypertension, obesity, physical inactivity and lack of health insurance. There are 12 High Burden counties that are in top quartile for the 3 CVD risk factors and have the lowest levels of health insurance.

Map 1: Prevalence of Obesity (%)
Mississippi age-adjusted prevalence of obesity in adults ages 18 and above (2018) is mapped with data from the PLACES database. The majority of counties in the Mississippi Delta area along with some counties in the central part of the state show the highest prevalence of obesity.

The majority of counties in Mississippi Delta area along with some counties in the central part of the state show the highest prevalence of hypertension. Also, counties in the top quartile of obesity, physical inactivity, lack of health insurance, and hypertension prevalence are identified and highlighted as high burden counties.

This series of maps can be used by the Office of Chronic Disease Prevention in the Mississippi State Department of Health to consider how to address the burden of cardiovascular disease risk factors in high burden counties.
