Global COVID-19 Vaccine Scale-up

Updated March 13, 2023

The goals of CDC’s global COVID-19 vaccine scale-up activities are to:

  • Limit human-to-human transmission
  • Minimize the impact of COVID-19 in vulnerable countries with limited preparedness capacity
  • Reduce specific threats that pose current and future risk to the United States

A key component of CDC’s global COVID-19 response is support for immunizations in low- and middle-income countries. CDC’s goals in this area are underpinned by four vaccine pillars:

  1. Support national delivery of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines (implementation)
  2. Support development of vaccine policies and program improvement through evaluations
  3. Strengthen immunization capacity at the country level
  4. Increase scientific knowledge for COVID-19 vaccination and other vaccine-preventable diseases (effectiveness)
