What to know
- The Research Data Center (RDC) provides access to restricted data from the National Center for Health Statistics and from other federal government agency surveys and studies.
- Accessing restricted-use data through the RDC protects the identity of study participants.
Overview
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) operates the Research Data Center (RDC) to allow researchers access to restricted-use data.
Some data collected in health research could be used to identify people, facilities, and other institutions that have participated in these surveys and studies. Analyzing these data can provide greater understanding of health issues, but the information should only be used for approved purposes.
The RDC does not provide any data that directly identifies participants, such as names, social security numbers, and addresses. The RDC does provide data items (variables) that could potentially identify participants if combined with other information. These variables—like details about a person's job or county of residence—are called indirect identifiers.
Requesting access
Researchers must submit an application outlining the need for access to restricted-use data. NCHS evaluates the application to—
- Protect the confidentiality of survey participants (respondents), study subjects, and institutions.
- Provide access to restricted-use data for statistical purposes.
