The figure above is a bar chart showing that in 2015, diabetes was a reason for 4.2%26#37; of visits by adults to office-based physicians. Men aged 18–44 years had a higher percentage of visits for diabetes compared with women aged 18–44 years (2.2%26#37; versus 0.4%26#37;, respectively). Both women and men aged 18–44 years had a lower percentage of visits for diabetes compared with adults aged 45–64 and ≥65 years.

Based on a sample of visits to nonfederally employed office-based physicians who are primarily engaged in direct patient care. Physicians in specialties of anesthesiology, pathology, and radiology are excluded from the survey.

§ Diabetes mellitus indicated by patient as one of the reasons for visit. National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey collects up to five reasons for visit.
