Left Value Axis Panel

At a glance

The Left Value Axis Panel adjusts the display settings on the vertical axis for charts (or the horizontal axis for horizontal charts). Sometimes this panel is called the Left Value Axis panel, and sometimes it will display as just the Value Axis panel.

Where to Use

Visualization Types‎

This panel displays for all chart types except Sparklines.

Common Fields

Axis Type: Choose from numeric (linear scale), numeric (logarithmic scale), or - for area, bar, and line charts - categorical scale.

Label: Type a label for the axis.

Number of Ticks: Tick marks provide reference points on a scale. The general rule of thumb is to use them judiciously and avoid using them at odd intervals. Please note that the number entered is not always the number that is displayed. Factors such as space available and data may affect the exact number used.

Size (Width): This increases and decreases space available between the Value Axis and the Label, if used or the Legend if it is set Left.

Label Offset: Change the distance between the axis and the label to increase readability.

Use Responsive Ticks: Deviation, Horizontal Bar, and Paired Bar charts only. Adjust the rotation of the ticks based on the size available.

Tick Rotation (Degrees): Set between 0 and 90 to make labels easier to read, if needed.

Show Gridlines: Not available for Deviation, Horizontal Bar, or Paired Bar charts. Some charts may benefit from grid lines. Be aware of visual clutter.

*NEW* Tick Labels Above Gridlines: Only available when Show Gridlines is checked. This option moves the tick labels into the chart and places them on top of their respective line.

Add Padding to Value Axis Scale: Adds additional space to the top of the axis if your visualization seems cluttered.

Add Commas: Commas can be added to large numbers to increase readability. Commas added into a data file may cause issues in the editor. Remove them from the data and select this option box to add them to the chart automatically.

Abbreviate Axis Values: If your data goes above the hundreds, you can select this option to abbreviate numbers into the appropriate letter for that number, such as "10k" and "40M".

Round to Decimal Point: Set the number of places to round the data to.

Prefix: Add characters before the data, such as $.

Suffix: Add characters after the data, such as %.

*NEW* Only Show Top Prefix/Suffix: Displays the prefix or suffix only on the top tick of the axis. All other ticks will only show the numerical value.

Hide Axis: Remove the axis line from the chart. Consider the chart’s interpretation by the user to guide this selection.

Hide Tick Labels: Remove the numeric labels from the tick marks. Consider the chart’s interpretation by the user to guide this selection.

Hide Ticks: Remove the tick lines from the axis. Consider the chart’s interpretation by the user to guide this selection.

Left Axis Max Value: This will extend the chart to allow values beyond the chart’s data values. (Example: If the data values are percent values out of 100, you can Update the Max value to “100”.)

Left Axis Min Value: This will extend the chart to allow values before the chart’s data values, including negative numbers.

Area, Bar, Combo, Line, and Scatter Chart Specific Fields

Add Axis Category: Not available for Scatter charts. Click the button to add categories for a categorical axis. Selecting categorical axis will open options to set custom-colored categories based on numerical data. It will disable the bar label and ticks, although most other options will remain.

  • Category Height: Height of the category. Start from the x-axis and build up for multiple categories.
  • Color: Select colors from hex values. Text should automatically adjust for Section 508 contrast.
  • Label: Label the category. If the label does not appear, you may need to increase the Size (Width) of the axis.

Add Anchor: Add a static line across your visualization to mark a goal or comparative point.

  • Anchor Value: Choose the numerical value.
  • Anchor Color: Select the color from hex values. Consider color contrast with the rest of the data.
  • Anchor Line Style: Choose from Small Dash, Medium Dash, Large Dash, and Solid.

Deviation Chart Specific Fields

Deviation Point: Set the numeric point at which the data shifts from one category to another.

Deviation Point Label: Label the deviation point. Defaults to Target.

Show Deviation Point Label: Check to show the label on the visualization.
