State surveillance helps epidemiological research.

State-based surveillance on silicosis and work-related asthma (WRA) contributes to NIOSH epidemiological research. It supports prevention activities and science-based policy.

NIOSH funds the State-Based Occupational Safety and Health Surveillance Program. All states funded under this agreement conduct population-based surveillance for pneumoconiosis (hospitalizations and mortality) and WRA.

Some states receive funding for case-based or expanded occupational respiratory disease surveillance like silicosis and work-related asthma.
