Protecting the Mental Health of Offshore Workers

Wednesday, August 14, 2024 | 11:00 am - 12:00 pm Eastern

Please join us for our second ERP webinar of 2024. Presenters will focus on protecting the mental health of offshore maritime workers. Samantha Case from NIOSH will cover the unique work environment and stressors involved with offshore maritime work. Marissa Baker from the University of Washington will provide a brief overview of a study assessing the mental health of U.S. mariners during COVID-19. Julie Sorensen and Mandy Roome of the Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety will present on their work on the provision of online resources for fishermen's mental health.

Presenters for the August 14, 2024 Webinar

Samantha Case, PhD, MPH, CSP is a research epidemiologist with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Center for Maritime Safety and Health Studies. Since starting her career with NIOSH in 2014, she has studied risk factors for injuries, fatalities, and vessel casualties in commercial fishing, offshore seafood processing, and marine transportation. She is a Certified Safety Professional, holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and earned her PhD in Safety Sciences from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Marissa Baker, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the University of Washington Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) in the School of Public Health. She also serves as Deputy Director of the Northwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led a survey assessing mental health of US Mariners. This project identified stressors and solutions that will help improve work experiences for mariners.

Julie Sorensen, PhD is the Director of the Northeast Center for Health and Safety, a program of the Bassett Healthcare Network in Cooperstown, NY. Julie received her PhD in Epidemiology from Umea University, in Umea, Sweden, holds a Masters in Medical Anthropology and a Bachelor's Degree in Communications. Julie's research interests include qualitative research methods, social marketing, intervention development, intervention dissemination and human behavior research. She has been working with fishermen for over a decade on developing health and safety interventions that respond to the unique needs of fishing communities.

Amanda (Mandy) Roome, PhD is a Research Scientist at the Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety, a program of the Bassett Healthcare Network in Cooperstown, NY. Mandy received her PhD (Anthropology), MS (Biomedical Anthropology) and MA (Anthropology) from Binghamton University (NY), and holds a bachelors degree in Anthropology from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Her research interests include qualitative research methods, infectious disease transmission dynamics, intervention development and human behavioral health. She has worked with fishermen for the last 6 years on developing health and safety programs to address their communities' needs.
