To be selected as a host site, we require that sites be able to provide EIS officers with projects and experiences that will result in a well-rounded training and completion of EIS Core Activities of Learning. Host sites should provide exceptional supervision and support to officers during this 2-year training fellowship, as well as ample opportunities to collaborate with public health partners outside of the host site. The EIS program evaluates sites based on the scope, quality, and diversity of the experiences and supervision the site can offer.

Centers, Institutes, and Offices (CIOs) and public health agencies such as state, tribal, local, and territorial public health organizations are eligible. EIS officers have also been placed with a non-governmental assignment under special circumstances. The position must afford a unique training opportunity for the EIS officer, have a close relationship with their local/state health department, and have EIS alumni on staff to supervise.

All host sites must be willing to consider, interview, and rank officers from a wide variety of backgrounds, including doctoral-level scientists, physicians, veterinarians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

Supervisory Requirements

Host site supervisors are critical to the success of EIS officers. Supervisors and colleagues within the host site must commit to work with an officer to further develop their applied epidemiology and professional skills.

Expectations for Supervisors

  • Be able to devote at least 10% of their time per week coaching, directing, supervising, guiding, and providing on-the-job training and developmental opportunities to the officer.

Integrate the EIS officer into the assignment and treat as regular members of the team.
