Key points
- As a healthcare provider, it is important to ensure you are vaccinating patients who meet the criteria for a dengue vaccine.
- Use this checklist to confirm if your patient is eligible for vaccination.
Checklist
Your patient must have laboratory confirmation of a previous dengue infection to receive the dengue vaccine. Confirmation includes evidence of a prior acute dengue virus infection with:
- A positive dengue RT-PCR test result, or
- A positive dengue NS1 antigen test result
If evidence of a prior acute dengue virus infection is unavailable, you can also confirm a previous infection using positive results on both of the following tests in a two-step testing algorithm:
Additionally, your patient must meet ALL of these criteria:
- Is between 9-16 years old
- Puerto Rico
- U.S. Virgin Islands
- American Samoa
- Federated States of Micronesia
- Republic of Palau
- Republic of the Marshall Islands
- Does not have a history of severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of Dengvaxia or any component of the vaccine
- Has no diagnosis or history of severe immunodeficiency or immunosuppression caused by disease or therapy
If you answer NO to ANY of these criteria, your patient is NOT eligible for vaccination at this time.
