This table describes the number of cases of tuberculosis (TB) disease, TB incidence rates, the number of deaths due to TB disease, and mortality rates of deaths due to TB disease in the United States, by year, from 1953 to 2024.

Key Highlights

  • In 2024, the national TB case count was 10,388 and the corresponding incidence rate was 3.1 per 100,000 population, representing a 7.9% increase in case count and a 6.9% increase in rate compared with 2023.
  • In 2023, the most recent year for which data are available, 572 TB deaths were reported by the National Center for Health Statistics.
  • Despite the increase in TB cases each year since 2020, the TB death rate has remained stable at 0.2 per 100,000 population.

3The large decrease in death rate in 1979 occurred because late effects of tuberculosis (e.g., bronchiectasis or fibrosis) and pleurisy with effusion (without mention of cause) are no longer included in tuberculosis deaths.

4Case data after 1974 are not comparable to prior years due to changes in the surveillance case definition that became effective in 1975.
