Figure. Flow diagram of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, FallStyles Survey (September 24, 2020, to October 10, 2020), including sample sizes for each phase of the analysis. Abbreviation: HCP, health care provider.
The figure is a flowchart showing the inclusion and exclusion criteria and resulting sample sizes for each analysis conducted in the study. The original data set included 3,625 adults with complete survey data. Sixteen adults were excluded because they did not complete the arthritis diagnosis item. This resulted in 3,609 adults in the sample; 2,495 were excluded from all analysis because they did not report an arthritis diagnosis, leaving 1,114 adults eligible for the study.
One individual was removed because they were missing the health care provider advice item, leaving 1,113 adults with arthritis eligible for the first analysis. The 1,113 adults from the first analysis met the inclusion criteria for the second analysis. The following were excluded from the second analysis: 175 adults who did not recall receiving health care provider advice for physical activity, 18 who were missing a body mass index score, 6 who were missing data for chronic pain, 1 who was missing data for self-reported health status, 35 who were missing data for the number of health care provider appointments they attended in the past 12 months. This resulted in 878 adults with arthritis in the second analysis.
The 1,113 adults from the first analysis met the inclusion criteria for the third analysis. The following were not eligible for the third analysis: 175 adults who did not recall receiving health care provider advice for physical activity, and 346 who reported never receiving health care provider advice for physical activity. This resulted in 592 adults with arthritis eligible for the third set of analyses. For the analysis assessing health care providers recommendations, an additional 4 people were excluded for not answering this item, resulting in a sample size of 588. For the analysis assessing health care provider counseling content, 9 adults were excluded for not answering this item, resulting in a sample size of 583.
