CDC activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to support the response to Hurricane Dean.
About the Response
Hurricane Dean formed west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands as a tropical depression on August 13, 2007.
On August 21, it made landfall on the east coast of Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico as a category five hurricane. Dean's strong winds, rains, and storm surge were responsible for 32 deaths across five countries: Haiti, Mexico, Jamaica, Dominica, and St. Lucia.
CDC activated its EOC to support hurricane-response activities.
These activities include:
- ensuring appropriate public health and personal safety communications are delivered
- maintaining situational awareness of media interest, reports, etc. of outbreak events
- coordinating daily updates and decisions about teleconferences between all involved parties
- gaining information (through collection and documentation) for future responses
