The OSHA-NIOSH Small Business Checklist App can improve safety and health in the workplace. The app is a free tool that features checklists and other workplace safety and health resources for small businesses. The app was developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and NIOSH and is based on the OSHA-NIOSH Small Business Safety and Health Handbook.

App Features:

The app includes the following features:

  • Self-inspection checklists to help small businesses identify workplace hazards.
  • Checklists were designed for general industry (manufacturing, retail, services, etc.), not for construction or maritime.
  • Select favorite checklists relevant to your business.
  • Add photos and comments to items within checklists.
  • OSHA and NIOSH web resources available within checklists.

Does completing the checklists ensure that my company is in compliance with OSHA standards?

No, employers should instead use the checklists as a starting point for identifying and fixing workplace hazards. Employers should not use them to ensure compliance with OSHA requirements.

What industries would find these checklists helpful?

The checklists were designed for small- and medium-sized employers in general industry (manufacturing, retail, services, etc.), not for construction or maritime employers.

When I enter information on these checklists, is it sent to OSHA or other government agencies?

No, the information that you enter on this app is saved to your phone.

Do I have to complete all the checklists?

No, users can complete the checklists that they determine are relevant to their workplace. Use the Favorites function to help identity the relevant checklists.

Can I share or generate a report of my completed checklists?

The app does not currently allow users to share completed checklists. The share feature currently allows users to share a PDF of the entire Handbook.

How do I use the Search function?

Users can do two types of checklist searches: 1) From the checklist landing screen, users can search on the checklist title 2) When in a specific checklist, users can search for specific words within that checklist (case sensitive).
