Indexed Dermal Bibliography (1995-2007)
2005
NIOSH Docket Number 43
More than 13 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to chemicals via the skin. Skin disorders are among the most frequently reported occupational illnesses, resulting in an estimate annual cost in the United States of over $1 billion. The Indexed Dermal Bibliography (IDB) will fill a need for an easy to-use tool to locate valuable information on occupational skin exposure issues. The IDB will provide lists and descriptions of resources by topic for users looking for specific information regarding risk assessment and management strategies for exposures to dermal hazards in the workplace. This IDB is structured for multiple levels of users (workers, employers, industrial hygienists, researchers and policy makers) to direct individuals to informational resources addressing occupational skin exposures. The IDB will contain listings of review articles and overview or educational information on a wide range of dermal topics including hazard identification, exposure characterization, health effects surveillance, risk assessment, and risk control management. The original name of this document was “Comprehensive resource guide for managing occupational exposures of skin to hazardous materials.” Based on comments received during the internal and external review of the document, the name was changed to more accurately reflect its scope, purpose, and content.
