Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics
The Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics encourages cooperation and collaboration among 23 federal agencies. It promotes communications to improve data quality and utility among and between statistical communities of data producers, researchers, policymakers, and the public.
The Forum's America's Children: Special Issue 2024, Maternal and Infant Health and Well-Being report highlights 15 indicators, covering domains related to health, family and social environment, economic circumstances, health care, physical environment and safety, and behavior. The health domain covers topics such as maternal vaccination, maternal mortality, and maternal postpartum depressive symptoms. The report features data from multiple NCHS surveys and the National Vital Statistics System.
Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics
The mission of the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics is to encourage cooperation and collaboration among federal agencies in order to improve the quality and utility of data on the aging population. NCHS is a member of the Forum.
The Forum works to—
- Widen access to information on the aging population through periodic publications and other means.
- Promote communication among data producers, researchers, and public policymakers.
- Coordinate the development and use of statistical databases among Federal agencies.
- Identify information gaps and data inconsistencies.
- Investigate questions of data quality.
- Encourage cross-national research and data collection on the aging population.
- Address concerns regarding collection, access, and dissemination of data.
Interagency Council on Statistical Policy
NCHS is one of the principal federal statistical agencies of the United States. As a statistical agency, NHCS belongs to the Interagency Council on Statistical Policy (ICSP).
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) leads the ICSP. It is composed of—
- Statistical Officials from each major cabinet agency
- Heads of the 13 principal statistical agencies and 3 recognized statistical units
The ICSP—
- Coordinates statistical work across organizations
- Enables the exchange of information about organization programs and activities
- Advises and counsels OMB on statistical activities
- Advances improvements in data access and expansion of evaluation capacity to support evidence-based decision-making
Within the ICSP framework, NCHS is the federal agency responsible for collecting and sharing the country's vital and health statistics.
National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics
Congress established the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS). NCVHS is an advisory body to HHS on health data, statistics, and national health information policy.
NCVHS—
- Fulfills important review and advisory functions related to health data and statistical problems of national and international interest
- Conducts studies of prevailing current topics
- Makes recommendations for improvement of the Nation’s health statistics and information systems.
NCHS provides executive secretariat and logistical support services to the Committee.
Washington Group on Disability Statistics
The main purpose of the Washington Group on Disability Statistics is the promotion and coordination of international cooperation in generating statistics on disability suitable for censuses and national surveys. Its major objective is to provide basic information on disability that is comparable worldwide.
The WG invites representatives from all national statistical agencies to participate in addressing the statistical challenges to—
- Collecting valid, reliable and cross-nationally comparable data on disability
- Developing methods to improve statistics on persons with disabilities globally
NCHS is a WG member.
