Early Release reports on key health indicators

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) provides preliminary estimates for several important health measures (key health indicators) before the final NHIS data files are ready for release. The NHIS Early Release program produces—

  • National estimates for these health indicators every three months (quarterly)
  • National estimates with some demographic information twice a year (biannually)

Key indicators include

  • Health status, including disability status or diagnosed hypertension
  • Healthcare service use, including doctor visits or dental exams
  • Healthcare access, including not taking medications to save money
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Health behaviors, like tobacco use
