EHR Product Certification

Key points

  • You must use a Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT) product to register with the National Health Care Surveys Registry.
  • Your CEHRT product also must meet applicable Promoting Interoperability requirements.
  • Learn how to verify your Electronic Health Record (EHR) product's certification and what to do if yours is not certified.

Certification requirements

As of January 2020, all registered providers, hospitals, and groups must use Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT) products. These products also must be certified to the Promoting Interoperability criterion of 170.315 (f)(7): Transmission to Public Health Agencies—Health Care Surveys [(f)(7)].

Verifying certification

Find out if your Electronic Health Record (EHR) product is certified to (f)(7) by checking the Certified Health IT Product List.

Steps

  1. Click on "Browse All" on the top right of the screen.
  2. Click on "Advanced Search."
  3. Click on "Certification Criteria" under "Filter by."
  4. Scroll down the list and check 170.315 (f)(7): Transmission to Public Health Agencies—Health Care Surveys. Note: click anywhere but the pop-up.

If you do not see your EHR product on the CHPL, ask your vendor if they are certified to (f)(7). The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) will maintain your active engagement status with us if your certified product is not listed on the CHPL website yet.

CEHRT vendor versions

NCHS updates the Registry Portal's EHR vendor list once a month. If the Registry Portal's does not include your updated EHR vendor version, please select the most current version available from the list. Once the EHR vendor list is updated, you should update your vendor to its accurate version.

Upgrading your EHR product

If you are planning to upgrade your EHR product or otherwise try to become compliant with this requirement, you can remain in active engagement status. Ensure that your Portal registration indicates that your "EHR will be compatible."
