Preventing Healthcare-associated Legionnaires’ Disease

The key to preventing Legionnaires’ disease is to reduce the risk of Legionella growth and spread. Building owners and managers can do this by maintaining building water systems and implementing controls for Legionella. See Prevention with Water Management Programs and Special Considerations for Healthcare Facilities for more information.

In June 2017, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a survey and certification memo stating that healthcare facilities should develop and adhere to ASHRAE-compliant water management programs to reduce the risk for Legionella and other pathogens in their water systems. Learn more about what this CMS requirement covers.
