Examples of how Illinois is working to prevent overdose
Statewide alert system
After detecting major overdose spikes, the Illinois Overdose Response Strategy (ORS) team helped convene partners from state and local health departments and the Illinois Department of Human Services to create an alert system. This system provides real-time responses by sharing maps with identified clusters of overdose and emergency medical services data with local health departments, law enforcement, and reduction task forces.
Opioid overdose alert system
Chicago converted data from their opioid overdose alert system into an actionable response plan, advancing outreach efforts in persistent overdose hotspots. As a result, there are now teams and processes in place to respond to overdose spikes with naloxone, education, and linkages to additional resources via outreach events.
Launch of Opioid Recovery Hotline
Chicago piloted a statewide medication assisted recovery hotline that offers immediate telephonic prescriptions of buprenorphine and same- or next-day in-clinic methadone appointments. The hotline now accepts all patients regardless of insurance status, income, or documentation, and provides transportation means to all callers.
