What to know

Immunization information systems (IIS) are confidential, population-based, computerized databases that record all immunization doses administered by participating providers to persons residing within a given geopolitical area. This information details how to access immunization records for vaccine recipients who received a vaccine in Massachusetts.

General Information

Massachusetts’s IIS is called MIIS, and it includes immunization records for vaccine recipients of all ages. Visit this webpage to learn more about the IIS.

Child Consent to Participate

For children, MIIS requires mandatory inclusion by law. Children are included in the IIS with no possibility for their parent(s)/guardian(s) to opt them out.

Adult Consent to Participate

For adults, MIIS requires mandatory inclusion by law. Adults are included in the IIS with no possibility to opt out.

Provider Reporting

Massachusetts does have a mandate for vaccination providers to report immunizations to MIIS. The reporting mandate:

Data Sharing

Massachusetts does have a policy that regulates sharing data from MIIS with other public health entities. The data sharing policy:

  • Requires a data use/sharing agreement or memorandum of understanding,
  • Requires protecting the data’s confidentiality, and
  • Allows vaccine recipients to request to limit the sharing of their data that are stored in the IIS.
