IIS Policies: California

What to know

Immunization information systems (IIS) are confidential, population-based, computerized databases that record all immunization doses administered by participating providers to persons residing within a given geopolitical area. This information details how to access immunization records for vaccine recipients who received a vaccine in California.

General Information

California's IIS is the California Immunization Registry (CAIR2), and it includes immunization records for vaccine recipients of all ages. Visit this webpage to learn more about the IIS.

The jurisdiction is authorized by law to operate CAIR2. For more information, please see California Health & Safety Code § 120440(b)(1).

Child Consent to Participate

For children, CAIR2 requires mandatory inclusion by law. Children are included in the IIS with no possibility for their parent(s)/guardian(s) to opt them out.

Adult Consent to Participate

For adults, CAIR2 requires mandatory inclusion by law. Adults are included in the IIS with no possibility to opt out.

Provider Reporting

California does have a mandate for vaccination providers to report immunizations to CAIR2. The reporting mandate:

  • Mandates universal reporting by law.

Data Sharing

California does have a policy that regulates sharing data from CAIR2 with other public health entities. The data sharing policy:

  • Allows data to be shared upon request or with approval/authorization and
  • Allows vaccine recipients to request to limit the sharing of their data that are stored in the IIS.
