TREND

Purpose

The Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with Nonrandomized Designs (TREND) statement was created by CDC’s HIV Prevention Research Synthesis (PRS) Project in collaboration with HIV researchers and journal editors. The goal of the TREND statement is to improve the reporting standards of nonrandomized evaluations of behavioral and public health interventions.

Overview

The TREND statement has a 22-item checklist developed to guide standardized reporting of nonrandomized controlled trials. The TREND statement is similar to the CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement developed for randomized controlled trials. A collective effort in promoting transparent reporting improves research synthesis and advance evidence-based recommendations for best practices and policies.

Background and impact

The TREND statement was first published in a special issue of the American Journal of Public Health in March 2004.1 Many journals and organizations have endorsed the TREND statement and recommend or require the use of the TREND statement for their reviewers and authors. Many authors cite and utilize the TREND statement in their work and publications.

Get involved

We encourage all researchers, funding agencies, journal editors, and reviewers to use the TREND statement as a guide when designing evaluation studies, reporting evaluation results, and reviewing manuscripts for scientific publication.
