Types of CE

CDC accredits educational activities with up to 10 types of CE:

  • All Health Professionals — Continuing Education Unit (CEU)
  • Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES®)
  • Master Certified Health Education Specialists (MCHES®)
  • Nurses — Certified Nurse Education (CNE)
  • Pharmacists— Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE)
  • Physicians — Continuing Medical Education (CME)
  • Physician Assistants — American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA)
  • Public Health Professionals - Certified Public Health (CPH)
  • Social Workers — Approved Continuing Education (ACE)
  • Veterinarians — American Association of Veterinary State Boards/ Registry of Approved Continuing Education (AAVSB/RACE)

Accrediting Bodies

CDC is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Registered nurses should request continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours. Most U.S. State Boards of Nursing accept ANCC contact hours. California and Iowa licensed registered nurses have special considerations.

Live activities are educational activities presented in a live format with time-limited availability.

  • Workshops
  • Recurring programs (educational activities that are repeated throughout a 2-year period with the same content each time)
  • Series events (scheduled trainings offered over a 2-year period with content that changes each time; the overall objectives and length of the training remain the same, but the content, post-test, and speakers change for each occurrence)
