2023 Project: University of California, San Diego (UCSD)

Leveraging online phylogenomics to improve the accuracy, resolution, and timeliness of wastewater-based epidemiology

What to know

UCSD researchers will develop and apply novel pathogen-agnostic phylogenomic methods to improve the accuracy, resolution, and time-efficiency of wastewater-based epidemiology.

Planned activity

This project will allow up-to-date comparisons with pathogen variants detected worldwide and explore ways to discover new variants from wastewater samples. The overarching goal of this work is to enable more accurate and timely prediction of public health threats from a wide range of infectious disease-causing pathogens and provide detailed insight into the genomic makeup of lineages transmitted within host communities.

Awarded in 2023, this project is still in progress.
