Isolate and Data Requests

Key points

  • Institutions may request isolates and data from Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs).
  • ABCs pathogens include group A Streptococcus, group B Streptococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  • Complete a REDCap survey to start the request process.

Types of requests

Isolate requests from ABCs Isolate Bank

ABCs routinely provides isolates to external requestors for a variety of purposes, including instrument validation and research.

Available pathogens include:

  • Group A Streptococcus
  • Group B Streptococcus
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Neisseria meningitidis
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae

There may be a cost associated with isolate requests from for-profit institutions. All requestors are required to pay shipping fees. The CDC Biorepository stores and ships the isolates.

How to submit an isolate request‎‎

Submit a request to obtain isolates available from the ABCs Isolate Bank.

For other bacterial isolate requests, visit CDC & FDA Antimicrobial Resistance (AR) Isolate Bank.

Data only requests

ABCs publishes annual aggregate datasets with bacterium-specific case counts and rates by key demographic and laboratory characteristics.

How to submit an ABCs non-published data request‎‎

Submit a request to obtain available ABCs data that are not published on data.cdc.gov.

Process for submitting all requests

  1. Review available isolates selection criteria or posted datasets currently available.
  2. Complete a REDCap survey to initiate an isolate and data request.
  3. Be prepared to provide details of request including objectives, public health importance, and scientific methods in the survey.

All requests will be reviewed for scientific merit and specificity of data being requested and the risk of reidentification.

Data requests may require a Data Use Agreement (DUA)

Requests for non-published data may require establishment of a DUA between CDC and the external partner. CDC/ABCs will initiate the DUA.
