The Food Environment in 3 Neighborhoods in South Los Angeles, California: Access, Availability, Quality, and Marketing Practices

Food environment maps of 3 neighborhoods in South Los Angeles. The neighborhoods were defined as a 0.5-mile radius around 3 intervention churches. Each map shows the location of the church, brick-and-mortar retail food sources (grocery stores, restaurants, convenience stores), schools, parks, and census tracts (which are distinguished as either food-secure or food-insecure census tracts). Of 12 census tracts in Neighborhood 1, five are food insecure. Neighborhood 1 has 1 church, 2 schools, 2 parks, 6 grocery stores, 2 restaurants, and 2 convenience stores, all of which are located in food-secure census tracts. In Neighborhood 2, nine of 10 census tracts are food insecure. Neighborhood 2 has 1 church, 1 school, 3 grocery stores, 4 restaurants, and 1 convenience store; all of which are located in food-insecure census tracts. Neighborhood 3 has 1 church, 2 schools, 3 grocery stores, 13 restaurants, 2 convenience stores, 1 pharmacy, and 1 food bank. In Neighborhood 3, of 20 food sources, 17 are located in food-insecure census tracts.
