Laboratory Considerations

What to know

A blood lead test is the best available way to measure exposure to lead. There are several laboratory analytical methods for the determination of lead in blood. Improved technology and changes in analytical methodology have made it possible for laboratories to achieve lower limits of detection (LODs) and make more accurate and precise blood lead measurements. Highly specialized equipment and special precautions to avoid external lead contamination during blood collection, processing, and analysis are needed.
