Oil and Gas Extraction Program

The NIOSH Oil and Gas Extraction Program conducts research, works with partners, and develops workplace solutions to improve worker safety and health in the oil and gas industry.

National Occupational Research Agenda

The National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) is a NIOSH partnership program to stimulate innovative research and improved workplace practices. The following resources provide information about NORA and its work related to the oil and gas industry.

Formed in 2008, the NORA for Oil and Gas Extraction Council brings together individuals and organizations with a shared interest in improving occupational safety and health in this industry sector.

NORA Spring Health and Safety Summit‎

The NORA Oil and Gas Extraction Sector Council Health Safety Summit is an annual event highlighting the assessment and control of workplace hazards in the oilfield.

FOG extraction database

NIOSH maintains a national database of information about U.S. oil and gas extraction worker fatalities. The data collected in the Fatalities in Oil and Gas (FOG) extraction database helps protects workers by monitoring trends, identifying emerging issues, and producing timely reports summarizing fatal events in the industry. Data for key FOG variables are available through the NIOSH Worker Health Charts.
