The NIOSH Office of Extramural Programs (OEP) is responsible for extramural grants and cooperative agreements. It has three teams: Program Analysis/Translation Coordination, Research and Training Program Administration, and Scientific Review Administration.

Teams

The NIOSH Office of Extramural Programs (OEP) facilitates stewardship for, and management of, extramural grants and cooperative agreements. Through a diversified portfolio of high-quality extramural research, education, and training, OEP helps reduce work-related injuries and illnesses. Each year three teams within OEP manage 175-200 active grants and cooperative agreements.

Program Analysis/Translation Coordination

Research and Training Program Administration

This team consists of Scientific Program Officials (SPOs). They conduct the following activities for funded grants:

  • Monitor and evaluate progress
  • Advise on project changes (institution, PI, key personnel, budget, direction, scope)
  • Facilitate interactions among grantees
  • Serve as primary NIOSH contact for grantees
  • Coordinate with CDC Office of Grants Services
  • Assure compliance with research practices, such as protection of human subjects
  • Review project performance upon completion

Scientific Review Administration

This team consists of Scientific Review Officers (SROs) and Grants Technical Assistants (GTAs) that:

  • Manage Special Emphasis Panels (SEPs) to conduct review of applications submitted to non-standing funding announcements
  • Manage the Safety and Occupational Health Study Section (SOHSS) to review applications submitted to standing funding opportunity announcements. The team lead, or designee, acts as Designated Federal Official for SOHSS.
  • Provide prospective applicants with information related to the review process and outcomes of review.
