Success Story

The Immunize Kansas Coalition collaborated with Community Catalyst, CDC’s prime partner under IP21-2108. They shared the following story about a recent event:

The Immunize Kansas Coalition (IKC) took a significant step in promoting health equity with their event, "Entre Mujeres: The Health of Women," the first predominantly Spanish-language conference in Kansas City, KS. Held in late April, the conference reached diverse communities across Kansas, drawing 200 attendees and widespread media coverage.

Garden City Community College sponsored transportation, allowing women from western and central Kansas to attend. Supported by 15 sponsors and exhibitors, the event began with a lively performance by Trio Aztlan, a popular mariachi band. Attendees engaged in conversations, built connections, and explored vendor exhibits.

The program featured impactful presentations on prenatal and infant care, cancer prevention, and HPV prevention and education.

Stephania Lopez, a Newman University graduate, reflected on the empowering atmosphere. "This event was evidence of the power of engagement and sharing experiences to inspire each other to better serve our community. At this conference, black and brown people felt empowered. Their healthcare needs and discrepancies were voiced," Lopez shared.

Addressing critical health issues, the event offered free on-site HPV vaccinations, regardless of insurance status. Partners such as Caritas Clinic: Duchesne Clinic and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses Kansas City Chapter administered HPV vaccines to nearly 20% of conference participants.

IKC Executive Director Geovannie Gone highlighted the event's success, stating, “IKC continues to find innovative ways to reach our communities and educate them.”
