Tuberculosis: Challenges for Decentralization of Care, Control and Elimination of the Disease

Rio Grande do Sul (RS), the most Southern state in Brazil, with a population of 11,000,000, has a special situation concerning TB. It’s neighbors, (Argentina, Uruguay and Santa Catarina state), are far from the annual incidences found there. Diagnosis is not so bad but treatment results are terrible, especially in the state capital of Porto Alegre. The co-infection with HIV in the capital is thrice the Brazilian one and in RS, is twice. TB Awareness and screening amongst Tomorrow’s leaders, their Custodians

Today’s youth are said to be tomorrow leaders; the need to equip them with accurate TB knowledge has never been more compelling. Pupils and teachers in selected schools will be educated on TB and suspected cases (cough >2weeks) will be screened in conjunction with TB personnel. It’s expected that pupils and their teachers will in turn correctly enlighten their relatives about TB, disabuse associated misconceptions and refer suspected cases for screening.  The typical Nigerian market and motor-parks offer opportunities of interacting with hitherto unreached population, hence sensitization and screening of suspected cases will take place in selected sites within Ota.
