Hospital utilization

Estimates of hospital utilization (such as percentage of the population with a hospitalization) presented in Health, United States are based on data from the Family Core (1997–2018), Sample Adult (2019), and Sample Child (2019) questionnaires of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). NHIS hospital utilization data are based on household interviews with a sample of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. NHIS respondents are asked whether they had any overnight hospital stays in the past year, excluding overnight stays in the emergency room.
