Meet our leaders

Staff from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) lead Data Detectives Camp. Our instructors provide expertise in diverse public health disciplines. Volunteers from CDC and partner organizations also support our camp.

Ryne Paulose, PhD, MA

Camp Director | Instructor

Dr. Paulose, camp director and instructor

Dr. Paulose founded the Data Detectives Camp in 2016. Today, she is NCHS senior advisor for engagement

Previously, Dr. Paulose served as the director and associate director for science of the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys at NCHS. Dr. Paulose also was a director at Pfizer, Inc. in health economics and outcomes research. She trained as an epidemiologist, studying the spread and patterns of diseases and other health threats.

Dr. Paulose enjoys creating fun approaches to teaching statistics to children.

Christine Jones, MS

Director of Communication | Instructor

Ms. Jones, director of communications and instructor

Ms. Jones has been a camp instructor since 2024. She is a communication expert at NCHS. In this role, Ms. Jones finds ways to communicate data science in compelling and interesting ways. She also has served as the lead health communication specialist on several major NCHS projects.

She loves finding ways to make science fun and interesting to students.

Gladys Martinez, PhD

Director of Curriculum | Instructor

Dr. Martinez helped design the camp's statistical program (curriculum) and has been a camp instructor since 2016.

Dr. Martinez is a statistician demographer. She uses statistics to study the size, structure, and changes in groups of people. Dr. Martinez works in the Division of Health Interview Statistics at NCHS. She brings years of experience teaching, overseeing data collection for surveys, and researching fertility and reproductive health.

Dr. Martinez loves teaching kids all about data and pivot tables.

Juliana McAllister, MA

Director of Logistics | Instructor

Ms. McAllister has been a camp instructor since 2017. She is a survey statistician in the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys at NCHS. Ms. McAllister came to NCHS to oversee a national survey on hospital-based victim services. Her background is in criminology—the study of crime and criminal behavior.

Ms. McAllister loves coordinating all logistics for the camp, working with parents and camp staff for a smooth week of camp
