Funding overview
Long-acting injectable (LAI) antiretroviral therapy (ART) offers many potential advantages over daily oral treatment, such as:
- Improved convenience.
- Adherence.
- Treatment satisfaction.
There are barriers and challenges for the implementation of LAI-ART into current healthcare practice in logistics and equity. Some of these barriers may be overcome by using non-clinic sites, such as community pharmacies, to administer LAI-ART. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) supports research on LAI-ART by implementing LAI-ART administration in non-clinic settings.
A multisite effectiveness-implementation research study will show how to improve the acceptability, availability, and uptake of LAI-ART. This study should compare the delivery of LAI-ART in non-clinic community settings with traditional HIV clinical treatment.
Implementation outcomes of interest include:
- Acceptability.
- Perceived barriers and facilitators.
- Feasibility.
- Sustainability.
Health outcomes of interest include:
- Missed visits.
- On-time receipt of injections.
- The HIV care continuum, including retention in care and viral load suppression.
Using innovative strategies of LAI-ART administration in non-clinic-based settings to decentralize its delivery will expand treatment opportunities. This NOFO funds qualitative and quantitative research to study real-world LAI-ART use in an era of multiple HIV treatment modalities.
