Mick Ballesteros is the deputy associate director for science in the Division of Injury Prevention.

CDC role

Mick Ballesteros, PhD, is the deputy associate director for science in the Division of Injury Prevention (DIP) at CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Dr. Ballesteros provides leadership, planning, and guidance to division management and staff on scientific quality, policy, training, and research priorities on various division topic areas.

Previous experience

In 2001, Dr. Ballesteros began his career at CDC as an epidemic intelligence service officer, stationed in the center’s Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention. He has held various roles in NCIPC, including epidemiologist; team lead; and chief of the Statistics, Programming, and Economics Branch. He also served as a senior scientist in the Non-Communicable Disease Unit of CDC’s Center for Global Health from 2012 to 2015.

Education

Dr. Ballesteros received a master’s degree in preventive medicine and a PhD degree in epidemiology from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. He has authored more than 100 journal articles, book chapters, and government reports.
