Examples of how Mississippi is working to prevent overdose
State-community data sharing and response
Mississippi adopted a new data platform that enables communities across the state to collaboratively respond to drug overdose hotspots that previously would not have received a rapid response. The deidentified, population-based database sends tailored public health alerts to drug overdose hotspots in real time.
Coordinated public education campaign launch
Mississippi launched a comprehensive public education campaign, "Make Mississippi OD Free" to promote use of the state's Overdose Free website. This website provides information on the risks of opioid use and the availability of opioid-related resources.
Treatment referral tool for prescribers
Mississippi provides statewide access for prescribers to the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) tool via any mobile device. The tool aids providers in assessing patients for substance use disorder and opioid use treatment needs and then provides a list of treatment resources based on zip code.
