The Issue

  • Neighborhood disadvantage is associated with elevated rates of both fatal opioid overdose and assault-associated injury in Philadelphia, suggesting a shared structural pathway. In disadvantaged areas, overdose burden might reflect drug market conditions that contribute to violence.

What We Did

  • We evaluated whether fatal opioid overdose mediates the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and assault-associated injury.

What We Found

  • Fatal opioid overdose did not mediate the association between neighborhood disadvantage and assault-associated injury, but neighborhood disadvantage was associated with both outcomes.

What This Means

  • Addressing upstream factors of neighborhood disadvantage might be helpful strategies to address both violence and overdose.
