DENV can be transmitted from an infected, viremic woman to the

  • Fetus in utero
  • Neonate at parturition

 

Rates of perinatal transmission are unknown. Individual risk can vary by

  • Severity of maternal disease
  • Timing of infection transmission to the fetus or newborn is more likely if the mother is symptomatic near delivery
  • Theoretically perinatal DENV transmission could occur from a mother with an asymptomatic infection
