Infection with any of the four DENV can result in asymptomatic infection to severe, potentially life-threatening disease. Humans can be infected with a DENV four times over their lifetime, and they can have more than one episode of dengue from these infections. After an infection with a DENV, the patient will have

  • Lifelong type-specific immunity. A person infected with DENV-1 cannot become ill as a result of DENV-1 infection again.
  • Short-term cross-immunity against other DENV types for about 2 to 6 months.
