About

Ms. Heather Stang is the Senior Advisor for Clinical Laboratories in the Division of Laboratory Systems in the Office of Laboratory Systems and Response (OLSR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She leads the development of regulatory and voluntary standards and guidelines.

Experience

Ms. Heather Stang leads many of the activities between the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and CDC related to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) program. This includes the development of regulatory and voluntary standards, guidelines, and educational resources. She is the Executive Secretary of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC). She provides valuable technical assistance and consultation on laboratory standards and laboratory practices.

She is a member of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute's Expert Panel on Point-of-Care Testing. Ms. Stang leads many activities related to next generation sequencing (NGS) and is the co-principal investigator of the NGS Quality Initiative. In addition, she served as the Designated Federal Officer for the CLIA Regulations Assessment Workgroup and the NGS Workgroup. She served as the CDC Ex Officio for the CLIA Certificate of Waiver and Certificate for Provider-performed Microscopy Procedures Workgroup.
