CASPER addressing Tulsa County household preparedness

Type: Preparedness

Location: Tulsa County

Purpose: Oklahoma experiences a wide range of natural disasters. This includes thunderstorms, damaging winds, tornadoes, hail, flooding, wildfires, winter storms, and earthquakes that can cause hazardous conditions. The Tulsa Health Department (THD), along with Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps (OKMRC) volunteers, conducted a CASPER in October 2018. This CASPER occured over an eleven-day period.

The CASPER assessed the potential resiliency of Tulsa County residents in the event of a disaster. Gaps in preparedness were identified by strategically asking questions. Resiliency is commonly defined as the vulnerability of an individual or population plus the impact of a disaster divided by the potential capacity to recover. The household information gathered through the survey identified critical needs of Tulsa County residents in order to improve resilience when faced with a disaster.
