About Lyme disease

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks.

Breastfeeding with Lyme disease

There are no reports of Lyme disease being spread to infants through breast milk.

Mothers with Lyme disease who are being treated with antibiotics can continue breastfeeding. Some antibiotics are safer than others while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding mothers diagnosed with Lyme disease should consult with their healthcare providers. The provider can prescribe an antibiotic that is safe to use while breastfeeding.
