CAPT Djenaba Joseph, MD, MPH

Dr. Joseph leads CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, setting the strategic direction for the center's portfolio, which focuses on surveillance and epidemiology, policy improvements, health care system collaboration, and links between community and clinical services.

Role at CDC

Dr. Joseph is the acting Director of CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. She leads an executive team that sets the strategic direction for the center's portfolio, which focuses on preventing chronic disease and promoting health through data access, health interventions, screening support, and cost-effectiveness measurement.

Previous experience

A board-certified doctor in internal medicine and a captain in the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Joseph served as an EIS officer in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) from 2005 to 2007 and was the medical director of the Colorectal Cancer Control Program from 2009 to 2021. She was the chief medical officer at the Arcadia Community Based Outpatient Clinic in the Atlanta VA Medical System before returning to CDC as chief of the Program Services Branch in DCPC. Most recently, she served as the acting division director for DCPC.

Education

Dr. Joseph holds an MD from the University of Michigan Medical School and an MPH from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
