Surveillance Areas and Population

Key points

  • 10 states participate in the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) and Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs) network.
  • EIP is a collaboration between CDC, state health departments, and universities.
  • The total population of ABCs for invasive disease is approximately 45.5 million.
U.S. map highlights 10 areas participating in ABCs surveillance: entire states of Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico and Oregon as well as specific areas within California, Colorado, New York and Tennessee.

Surveillance population and isolate collection

The total population of ABCs for invasive disease is approximately 45.5 million. However, most states further restrict the population for certain pathogens to ensure complete reporting.

The table below summarizes the population under surveillance and isolate collection for each pathogen and state as of October 2022. Unless otherwise noted, surveillance is statewide. ABCs sites collect isolates for all cases included in surveillance areas, except where indicated (*) as different in the table below.
